✨ The Connecticut Nurses Association proudly hosted the New School Nurse Orientation on October 23, 2024, at the Courtyard Marriott in Cromwell! 🏫👩‍⚕️

While school nurses may not always be in the spotlight, their role is indispensable. From managing chronic conditions and supporting mental health to ensuring safety and addressing emergencies, school nurses are a critical part of student success. This year, led by @ctnurses Past President Stephanie Knutson, marked the seventh year of our school nurse orientation, covering essential topics like:

💼Legal requirements and standards of practice

🌟Supervisory roles and the impact of school nurses on student achievement

💊 State laws, medication regulations, immunization protocols

⚕️Special education, Section 504, and health assessments

In line with new legislation passed last year, school boards are now required to provide professional development programs for school nurses, which must include an orientation to school health services. This ensures that all new school nurses complete this essential training within six months of starting their role, helping them make a meaningful impact from day one. @ctmom_dentalclinic are looking for medical professionals to volunteer at their 18th annual free Dental Clinic! Volunteering will be done in medical triage taking patient blood pressures and reviewing patient’s medical history prior to seeing a Dentist 🦷

Requirements for volunteering in medical triage:
Must be a: MD, APRN, RN, PA-C, EMTs, and/or Paramedics. Blood pressure monitors will be provided but please bring your own stethoscope. Medical volunteers are also able to volunteer in any of the community volunteer departments including patient escort, hospitality, and patient or volunteer registration.

It pushes some people’s pain, voices, and bodies aside. It distorts care and kills people faster, but it continues to be an invisible risk factor. Too many continue to deny or look past this reality — that this system meant to heal is causing harm. But some fearless nurses are saying it’s time to get to work. Address human suffering. Advocate for the voiceless. This is where nursing began. But to heal, it will take everyone standing up and speaking out. Health justice, after all, is everybody’s work.

Recent findings published in the ANA’s scholarly journal, OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, reveal that a strong support system within the workplace is a key factor influencing nurses’ decisions to stay in their roles. Yet, it also highlights a critical need for more mental health resources to improve nurse retention.

In response, the ANA Membership Assembly has voted on several recommendations aimed at breaking down barriers and providing the mental health support our profession so desperately needs.

@ctnurses is proud to share the incredible work we’ve done on SB1 during the 2024 legislative session. This workplace violence bill marks a significant step forward in ensuring the safety of home health care workers in Connecticut.

🛡️ Hard Work Pays Off: The passage of SB1 and the subsequent launch of the In-Home Safety Grant Program, as announced by Governor Lamont, showcases our relentless effort. This program, funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), will enhance safety protocols and support services for home health care workers, providing emergency alert buttons, buddy escort systems, tracking devices, and more.

🌟 A Small Step in a Long Journey: While we’re thrilled to see some ARPA funds being utilized to prevent workplace violence, we recognize that this is just a tiny piece of the puzzle. There’s still a long way to go in changing the landscape of workplace violence prevention. We must continue to fight for the safety and well-being of all health care workers.

➡️ Looking Ahead to 2025: As we celebrate this victory, we’re already gearing up for the 2025 legislative session. The journey towards a safer working environment for all continues, and we remain dedicated to this crucial cause.

Last month, our dedicated CNA representatives: Executive Director Kim Sandor @kimberly.sandor , President Cassandra Esposito @cassinjects , Secretary Sue Yeakel, and Membership Assembly Representative and Past President Sue Goncalves @sg1234, traveled to Washington, DC for the @ananursingworld Membership Assembly. One of the key discussions was centered around the unique healthcare challenges faced by our veterans. Read below for the vital recommendations from this Dialogue Forum:

Veterans come with a unique set of challenges and social determinants associated with active military service such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), toxic chemical and airborne exposures, and higher rates of substance abuse disorders among other challenges. For that reason, ANA membership delegates voted on the following recommendations:

🎖️Considers the Veterans Community Care Program (VCCA) as a supplement to care delivery by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), not a replacement for that care. ANA shall advocate for policies that ensure a seamless care system between the VHA and VCCA.

🤝Work to improve nursing knowledge relating to the unique healthcare needs of the veterans population and their families.

🌟Continues efforts to remove all restrictions to nursing practice within VHA and allow all nurses to practice to the full extent of their education and training to meet the health access needs of all veterans and improve timeliness of care.
